Objectives of the Steelpan Academy

The foundation is intended to serve a three folded aim:

1.    The restoration of an important part of the cultural heritage of the island of Aruba, by putting this musical treasure once again on the central stage of the island's cultural activities.

2.    A contribution will be done to the development and the promotion of the identity-seeking process of the youth in Aruba through systematic and dedicated musical education.

3.    To honor the legacy of the late Mr. Edgar Connor, who was one of the greatest musical artists of Aruba, displaying an incredible virtuosity and craftsmanship in the field of the steelpan.

As the name of the project indicates, the target group will be the youth of Aruba, ranging from the age of 9 to 25.
Upon request we will also organize steelpan courses for adults.

With the three-folded objective in mind, the aim of the project is to teach and train the Aruban youth in playing the steelpan and by doing so promote the art of steelpan music.

A central part of the promotion will be the formation of a national youth steelpan orchestra: The Edgar Connor National Youth Steelpan Orchestra, that within a couple of years shall function as the future ambassador of steelpan music of the island of Aruba, both locally as internationally.
